When I first started working with design systems, I thought the bigger the better. Tons of components, endless tokens, every possible state already done for you. But over time I realized that most of those “huge” systems slow you down more than they help.
A simple design system does the opposite. It gives you structure without boxing you in. Here’s why I think minimal design systems are the real power move.
You get started faster. No need to learn someone’s overly complex logic. You just open the file and go.
Less maintenance. A smaller system means fewer things to break or update.
It grows with you. You can expand it as your project evolves instead of deleting what you don’t need.
Total flexibility. You can easily restyle it for different brands or products.
Clean and readable. No mess. You can actually find things.
Lighter files. Your Figma runs smoother when you don’t load 700 icons you’ll never use.
Creative freedom. You have the base, but you still get to make it your own.
Faster delivery. You spend less time managing and more time creating.
Easier collaboration. Everyone on your team can understand it quickly.
Better focus. Simple systems help you focus on solving problems, not fighting structure.
If this approach makes sense to you, you’ll probably love this design system I recently found. It’s minimal, customizable, and built to speed up your workflow without adding noise.
